Ancestral Healing, Ceremonial Leadership

Don Benito Apaza, born on February 2, 1960, comes from the Apaza lineage of the native Q’eros community in Peru. As a Pampamisayoq, he was raised in the traditions and customs of his people, learning from his father, his sister María Apaza—an esteemed Altomisayoq—and great masters Mariano Quispe and Pascala Apaza. Altomisayoq Pascala Apaza, one of his teachers, was the guardian who carried forth the sacred Nusta Karpay ceremony within the Q’eros lineage.

Within his community, Benito has served as councilor (regidor), entrusted with passing down prayers, ceremonies, and offerings to the elements in accordance with ancestral tradition. He also carries deep knowledge of agriculture, weaving, livestock, and harvesting—skills imparted to him by his grandfather, who taught him the sacred art of weaving ceremonial ponchos. These garments, created with wool from the community’s animals, are woven as living offerings to Pachamama and connected to Apu Wamanilpa (Apu Ausangate), the great protector of the Q’eros.

For over 50 years, Benito Apaza has shared his wisdom as a teacher to Tito La Rosa and many other master teachers and artists worldwide. Known as Q’ori Songo (“Golden Heart”), he is recognized for the purity of his heart, his deep connection with nature, and his sacred relationship with the Apus, the revered mountain spirits.
